The Stories

From KW in Colorado Springs
I had surgery in December and ended up with a spinal headache due to the spinal block. The anesthesiologist was so worried about me, he called me at home every day for the next week to check on me, because the blood patch had not worked to fix it. The nurse during my hospital stay was also wonderful and called me at home to check on me.

My child was in the hospital for dehydration when the lab tech came in to draw blood and my 4 year old was terrified. The lab tech tried to reassure her by offering her stickers etc. My child would not be moved. The lab tech promised her something very special and she finally relented. Later that evening the lab tech returned with a doll for my child. I was very impressed.

I recently stepped on a nail and had to go to the emergency room for a tetanus shot and to get my foot "cut up" to get some of the infected stuff out. Being poked and prodded in the foot area is not a pleasant feeling, in fact, the biggest amount of pain I've ever been in! My doctor was very kind, giving me a popsicle afterward (I'm 23, so imagine my surprise!). Also, later that day, I had to return because I was in more pain than the hospital staff said I would be, and the same doctor came right out to my car to take a look, without requiring me to come back inside the ER and go through that hassle again. It was a very nice to see that happen.

I don't have health insurance, but as a university student, I do have access to the campus health clinic. When I was experiencing migraines and IBS due to extreme stress (parents messy separation, school anxiety, dad's illness), my doctor at the clinic encouraged me to seek counseling (also on campus). It's nice when doctors acknowledge the link between psychological & physiological symptoms—i.e., instead of just prescribing something for me to treat my physical complaints, the doctor looked at the whole picture.
